I get this question a lot, so I decided to write a post about it ; When is the best time to see the Wildebeest Migration ? The great wildebeest migration is one of the many breathtaking experiences that East Africa has to offer. It is also one of the ‘Seven wonders of the world’. It’s magical, exceptional and extremely amazing.
Now the question is, when and where can the wildebeest migration be seen? Well, Kenya, one of East Africa’s best proudly presents the annual wildebeest migration. This happens in the magical Maasai Mara National Park between the months of July and October.
The Mara and the Serengeti are all-year wildlife viewing destination, but it is different if your only interest is the wildebeest migration.During this period over two million wildebeests followed by about 200,000 zebras and impalas cross to the Mara from Serengeti.
Since this entire process is constantly in search for greener pastures, the wildebeests always take advantage of the rains. It is a great deal for them to cross the Mara River into the green grasslands of Maasai Mara.
The migration however is not as smooth as it may seem. The journey is hit by hardships and all manner of challenges. Take for example, the crossing of the Mara River. Here, a large number of hungry crocodiles wait to prey on the herds and sadly some of the wildebeests do not make it across the river. The enjoyment however comes about by watching the millions of the wildebeests that make it across.
Now, planning to visit these two destinations is something that youneed to plan keenly. You have to put in mind that this is a magical experience happening in two countries. Whether it’s the Serengeti or the Mara, the experience is never the same. However, whether you choose to see it in Kenya or Tanzania, you can rest assured that it will be the most amazing experience ever.
