Kenya is one of the best countries to visit on an African safari. With all her beautiful people and great attraction sites, Kenya is definitely a country to remain on your bucket list every year.
Whether it’s the first time you are visiting Kenya or you have been here before, there are a number of things that you should carry to make your safari comfortable and worthwhile. We have made a list of some of the items. You can also add others that we might have missed and you think are necessary to you.
Clothing
Carrying the right clothes on a Kenyan safari is one of the most important things. Kenya is generally a hot/warm country and most of the tourist attraction sites are located in the hot regions. Your clothing should comprise of light clothes like shorts/baggy trousers, t-shirts, long loose dresses for ladies and loose shirts for men. You should carry very few warm clothes although this depends on the season you are visiting. Avoid carrying black clothes. They will absorb a lot of heat and result to a lot of sweating which will make you uncomfortable. Carry fairly bright clothes that will radiate heat and keep you cool even in the scorching sun. It is also advisable to carry cotton clothes over synthetic ones.
Hat and Sunglasses- Carry a wide brim hat with straps and a pair of dark lenses sunglasses with you. They will protect your eyes and face from harsh sunrays during safari walks. For ladies, you can also carry a headscarf to protect your hair from dust.
Shoes
Carry safari boots/sport shoes for safari walks to protect your feet. If your safari itinerary has no safari walks, a pair of sandals will be fine.
Swimming costume
If you are planning a Kenya beach safari, a pair of swimming costumes is a must have. In addition, most of the hotels and lodges in Kenya have swimming pools and carrying a swimming costume will be advantageous to you.
Sun Screen/Cream
Carry a sun screen with you and apply every morning before starting a safari. The sun screen should be of an SPF of 15 and higher.
A mosquito net or repellant- Although these will be provided in most lodges, camps and hotels having them in your back pack will be to your advantage.
Binoculars
Some animals will be far from the path and binoculars will come in handy. They are also useful for bird watching.
Camera- You will visit many beautiful places and a camera will be great to store these beautiful memories in form of pictures and videos.
Personal effects
Some hotels will provide you with some of these but it’s advisable to have them in your bag;
- Hair brush
- Shampoo
- Headphones- To kill boredom along the safari
- Books/a map / journal/ magazine
- Notebook and pen- To write down important towns, events and activities during the safari for remembrance
- Body lotion
- Lip balm
- Deodorant
- Mobile charger- Most safaris are long and a mobile charger will be useful in case your battery’s charge dies along the way
- As mentioned earlier, you can add anything else we’ve left out and is of importance to you. We wish you a beautiful Kenya Safari.
