ITINERARY AT A GLANCE
Start Nairobi / End Nairobi
The Wildebeest Migration takes place each year between July and October, when grazing has been exhausted in the Serengeti in Tanzania, and millions of Wildebeest, together with thousands of Zebra and antelope make their way north to the Masai Mara and the promise of greener pastures. Come and enjoy this incredible natural spectacle!
Day 1: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park
Your safari guide will be on hand to meet you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (or your Nairobi Hotel). En-route to the Amboseli National Park he will be able to answer any questions you may have and introduce you to the scenic Kenyan countryside. You will reach your lodge at Amboseli in time for lunch. After lunch you have some free time to settle in, explore your surroundings or have a little rest before your late afternoon game drive.
Amboseli National Park is situated on the lower foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, whose iconic snow-capped peak can be seen across the border in Tanzania. The landscape is particularly imposing and makes the perfect backdrop for some very special photographic opportunities.
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa Lodge or Similar.
The first activity of the day is the early morning game drive. Amboseli National Park is renowned as one of the best Parks in Africa to get up close and personal with large herds of free-ranging Elephants – a most rewarding experience. Watching them against the backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain makes it even more special! You will be back in camp for breakfast and have the rest of the day at leisure.
Relax around the pool, do some bird watching or grab the opportunity to go on a guided Nature Walk (a small charge is applicable), which will introduce you to all the little creatures that are often missed on a game drive.
Late afternoon will see you set off on another afternoon game drive with yet more viewing opportunities. Look out for Buffalo, Rhino, Zebra, Wildebeest and many species of antelope. Bird-life is also prolific and you can try to spot some of the 40 species of raptors that are found in the area.
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa Lodge or similar.
Day 3: Amboseli – Lake Nakuru National Park
Today you will be driven to Lake Nakuru. Your route will be via Nairobi, and we will provide complimentary picnic lunch for you to enjoy en-route. The Nairobi to Lake Nakuru portion of the drive is particularly scenic as you travel through the valleys and mountains of the Great Rift Valley to lovely Lake Nakuru.
Lake Nakuru National Park is home to a great many water birds including Flamingo, Pelicans, and Storks, and here you will also have the opportunity to spot endangered Rhino in their natural surroundings – a real treat! You will enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Park before checking into your lodge at either the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge or Nakuru Sopa Lodge. For the more adventurous, there is also the option to camp at one of several campsites near the Lake.
Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge or Similar.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara Game Reserve
After an early breakfast at your lodge it will be time to set off for another scenic drive to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, the highlight of any visit to Kenya. You will arrive in time for lunch at your lodge and will then have a little time to settle in, relax or have a quick power nap before your first game drive in this extraordinary wildlife reserve.
The Mara is without doubt one of the greatest wildlife destinations in Africa. Although the reserve is particularly famous for the Wildebeest Migration, wildlife viewing here is exceptional all year round. There are excellent numbers and varieties of wildlife to be seen and Big Five viewings are common-place. The reserve is also known for high concentrations of predators, especially during the Migration, so you are in for an exciting experience!
Your afternoon game drive will have you back in camp in time for sundowners as the sun makes a dramatic exit over the horizon. After a delicious dinner it will be time to fall asleep to the wonderfully hypnotic sounds of the African wilderness.
Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge or similar.
Day 5: Masai Mara Game Reserve
This morning excitement reaches an all-time high as you leave camp with a picnic lunch to enjoy a full day of wonder, observing and recording the Wildebeest Migration, highlight of your safari.
The annual Wildebeest Migration has been dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the Nature, and occurs when over two million Wildebeest, accompanied by thousands of Zebra and antelope migrate over a 1000km from the southern Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in search of food and water. They are eagerly pursued by a very large number of predators, and many do not survive the perilous journey.
Today you will have the opportunity to spend an entire day close to the Mara River, and will hopefully observe at least one dramatic crossing. Be sure to have extra batteries for those cameras – you will definitely need them!
Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge or similar.
Day 6: Depart for Nairobi
After a final breakfast at the Lodge it will be time to bid a sad farewell to the Masai Mara and set off back to Nairobi. You will arrive in time to enjoy a fabulous farewell lunch at Nairobi’s famous Carnivore Restaurant, before we transfer you to your hotel or the airport.
